This Special Issue of Journal of Energy Resources Technology (JERT) contains a selection of reviewed papers from the ECOS 2015 Conference,1 which was held in Pau, France, during June 29th–July 3rd, 2015. The ECOS series of annual conferences was established in 1987 by the ASME Energy Division and serves as a platform for engineers/scientists worldwide to meet annually for discussing developments in the field of energy conversion systems and related environmental, economic, and social issues. ECOS 2015 was its 28th conference.

This Special Issue contains a selection of ten papers presented at the ECOS 2015, which have passed the conference review process and were presented at the conference. To consider these papers eligible for publication in the Special Issue of JERT, a further international peer review process was held by JERT after the conference, which resulted in the selections in this Special Issue. As a result of authors' updates as well as revisions requested by the Reviewers, the papers included differ to variable extent from those presented in the conference.

These papers in this Special Issue cover the subjects of advanced thermodynamics, exergy analysis, energy-economics, dynamics of energy consumption and conversion, and energy planning and policy, with timely topical issues, such as renewables, CO2 sequestration, recovery of low-grade waste heat, energy storage, energy (shale gas) mining, hybrid energy systems, and heat and mass transfer systems. This Special Issue is a valuable presentation of the state-of-the-art and of advances in energy systems.

Deep gratitude goes to the authors for their contributions and to the reviewers for their valuable comments, which resulted in the improvement of the original papers. The publication of these ECOS 2015 papers in JERT would not have been possible without the perfect technical assistance and support of the editorial office and the leadership of the JERT Editor-in-Chief, Professor Hameed Metghalchi.
