Abstract

When liquid molecules interact in a highly confined region, their bulk characteristics are often overshadowed by near-field intermolecular and surface forces. These include van der Waals, electrostatic, structural, and surface tension forces. This paper will present two examples of how thermodynamic models and Molecular Dynamic simulation can provide insight into nanoscale liquid transport and phase change: liquid film stability and the curvature effect on surface tension of droplets and bubbles. Both examples have major ramifications on problems such as nucleation, condensation, boiling, biological transport etc.
