An open-loop, lumped parameter, digital computer model of the left heart, coronary artery, and aortic tree is discussed. Introduction of an external flow source (counterpulsation pump system) at any of the eight major nodal points located along the aorta is permitted. The model is run for a variety of conditions to assess the effects of counterpulsation pump timing, stroke volume, infusion/aspiration rate and pump cannula location on selected indices of cardiac performance. Simulation results are compared to appropriate data from two series of animal experiments using a thin-walled cannula and a pneumatically driven, nonhemolytic counterpulsation pump system.
